What is Zika Virus?
Zika virus, known for causing deformities in new-born babies has been spreading explosively throughout America. As many as 4 million are said to be infected by the mosquito borne virus – according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) in a report. After the ‘Ebola’ scare, Zika is the trending viral infection that is haunting the world.
This virus can be transmitted when a mosquito bites someone with the virus and then bites another human. The virus can move to new areas when mosquitos hitch a ride on travellers or cargo, or when infected patients travel to new territory and are bitten by mosquitoes there.
Reports of a serious neurological condition, called Guillame Barre Syndrome, that can lead to paralysis, have also risen in areas where the virus has been reported.
Many assume that there is a causal relationship between Zika infection during pregnancy and microcephaly is strongly suspected, though not yet scientifically proven.
